A precision rimfire discipline where shooters fire from a bench using rests and wind flags to achieve the smallest possible groups and highest scores at fixed distances. Success depends on rifle accuracy, ammunition consistency, wind reading, and meticulous shooting technique.
Combined Services
Based on traditional military shooting competitions, Combined Services involves a variety of rifle and pistol matches that test practical marksmanship skills. Competitors engage targets from different positions, distances, and time limits, emphasising accuracy, firearm handling, and field shooting proficiency
Field Rifle & 3 Positional
A challenging discipline that combines practical field shooting with traditional positional marksmanship. Competitors fire from prone, sitting or kneeling, and standing positions at varying distances, developing versatility, accuracy, and confidence in realistic shooting scenarios.
Rifle Metallic Sihouette
Shooters engage steel animal-shaped targets representing chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams at increasing distances. Targets must be knocked over to score, rewarding precision, consistency, and excellent wind-reading skills while providing an enjoyable and highly visual competition format.
Shotgun Clays
A fast-paced discipline that simulates the flight paths of game birds using clay targets launched from traps. Competitors test their reflexes, gun handling, and accuracy across a variety of presentations, making it one of Australia's most popular shotgun sports.
Precision Rifle
Inspired by modern precision rifle competition, this discipline challenges shooters to engage small steel targets from improvised positions under time pressure. It combines accuracy, movement, positional shooting, range estimation, and practical problem-solving using rimfire rifles and subsonic ammunition.
Steel Challenge
A fast-paced speed-shooting discipline where competitors engage a series of steel targets as quickly as possible. With simple stage layouts and an emphasis on consistency, Steel Challenge is suitable for shooters of all experience levels and firearm types.
Mandar
Mandar is a precision timed handgun shooting discipline unique to the Sporting Shooters Association of WA. It blends deliberate target accuracy with strict time limits and reloading, typically utilising turning targets that face the shooter for defined exposure
Handgun Metallic Silhouette
Competitors use handguns to engage steel silhouette targets representing chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams at varying distances. Targets must be knocked down to score, requiring excellent accuracy and the ability to judge distance.
Field Pistol
Field Pistol challenges shooters with targets placed at varying distances in an outdoor environment emphasising speed, movement and precision. Competitors develop practical marksmanship skills through a combination of precision shooting, distance estimation, and shooting from a variety of positions.
Black Powder Pistol
Celebrating the heritage of historic firearms, Black Powder Pistol competitors use traditional muzzle-loading or period-style handguns. Events focus on precision shooting and firearm handling, combining marksmanship skills with an appreciation of shooting history and craftsmanship.
Practical Shooting - Pistol & Shotgun
Practical Shooting challenges competitors to safely engage steel and paper targets through dynamic courses of fire using a pistol or shotgun. Combining speed, accuracy, movement, and problem-solving, the sport rewards efficient firearm handling and sound decision-making under competitive pressure.
Air Pistol
A highly technical precision shooting discipline conducted at 10 metres using compressed air pistols. Competitors fire at a stationary target, where success is determined by concentration, consistency, and refined shooting fundamentals rather than speed or recoil management.
